Looking for a great place for communion party on Long Island?  I’ve been entertaining at communion parties over Nassau County in Suffolk County for over 20 years and I’ve discovereda number of great places.

The trick to booking a great place for your child’s Communion party is to book it early.  It seems that some moms have an inside track and get the date of the Communion ceremony ahead of the rest of the neighborhood.  In case you are still scrambling to find a place you may want to consider  these alternatives:

Country Clubs. Check with friends and relatives who are members at the many country clubs and golf clubs on Long Island.  You usually need to have a member vouch for you but some clubs are open to the public.

Hotels.  There are a number of nice hotels in with excellent party rooms.  The quality of food and service is usually very good and parking is never a problem.

Knights of Columbus Halls. Knights of Pythias. VFW.  The quality of these party places will vary greatly.  It’s always advisable to do an on-site inspection before you book, one of these halls.

Firehouses.  A number of towns on Long Island have great party’s spaces attached to the local firehouse.  Most of these party rooms are well equipped, but they need some décor.

Condo and Co-op Community Rooms.  If you relative lived in a big apartment complex.  Chances are good that you’ll have access to a nice party room.

Church Halls.  Call a nearby church that isn’t having their communion ceremony on the same day as your parish and you can book a church hall room, very cheaply.

Rent a Tent. Communion parties in May and June can be fun outdoors, but sometimes the weather doesn’t cooperate.  Rent a tent with portable heating just in case the weather is inhospitable.

Restaurants.  Chances are every restaurant in your church’s neighborhood will be booked up quickly once the Communion dates are announced.  That’s why so many people choose to in another parish that is more convenient to the L.I.E or the Southern State Parkway. If you have relatives coming in from Connecticut look for restaurants that are near the Cross Island Parkway.

Once you found a place to have a party you probably realize that you need some sort of entertainment.  Hosting a party for 10 or 20 children in a restaurant can be a lot of fun as long as you have something to keep them entertained.

Communion Party Entertainment on Long Island.

I recently entertained a group of children over at Asphalt Green. It’s a great sports and fitness center located at  555 East 90th Street, between York & East End Avenues. Plenty of room, nice facilities and professional staff. It sure beats have a swarm of toddlers destroying your apartment! Have my show after the kids run around for a bit and they’ll sit and enjoy the magic.

Delizia Pizzerias. With locations on 1762 Second Avenue (Corner 92nd Street) and 1374 First Avenue (Between 73rd and 74th Street) you’re sure to find a nice place for your next party. For about $350 dollars you’ll get a party room for two hours and four pizzas.  BUT … if you are planning on having a birthday party in a pizzeria you will most certainly need to have live entertainment. The same holds true for the Chicago Grill Pizzeria Uno on East 86th Street. The kids will have fun making their own pizza – but that will not hold them for long. I love performing at UNO on both the east and west side. They really know how to host a party for kids.

Dylan’s Candy Bar is also a tried and true party spot for kids. But remember, you want to make sure you have organized, fun entertainment if you want your child’s party to be fun and memorable. I’ve done shows here for some celeb’s kids and I found the staff to be awesome.

Kidville is an tremendous place for parties for children up to age nine. They’ve got lots of fun stuff for kids to do. Most parents like to let the kids explore this kid safe party space and then top off the party with my magic show.

Serendipity – what could be sweeter than a birthday party in an ice cream shop? While it sounds tempting, realize that this store is pretty small and doesn’t have room for strollers or carriages. You may want more room.

Central Park.  A great spot for summer time parties. You will need plenty of help to make sure the kids don’t wander off. Encourage parents not to drop off the kids with you – invite them! (There’s plenty of room after all).  Unless you’re planning on using an amplifier or erecting a tent you don’t need a permit to have a party for a whole classroom of kids.

Remember, my magic show is perfect for children’s parties where you have a broad range of ages. While some kid’s entertainers can only handle very young kids – my show is fun for children from ages 3 to 93.

Long ago, birthday parties in Rye were a simple thing. When it was your child’s birthday you’d make a cake and invite some of the kids from the block to drop by after lunch.  You’d gift wrap a few practical items and a toy you spotted in the small toy store on Purchase Street.

Not anymore. Birthday parties in Westchester have become major events.

You need to invite the entire class … you need to go all out on presents and of course you have to have a magician. No, you have to have the best magician.

I’ve been entertaining at parties all over Westchester for that last 3 decades (I started at age 14). Over the years I’ve seen all sorts of birthday parties. You’re planning a birthday party for your child when it hits you. “How am I going to keep a bunch of kids under control and happy?” Maybe you’ll hire a magician? But how do you find a good one?

First, don’t look for bargains. You hire a cheap party entertainer and guess what? You end up with a performer who isn’t in demand. (If you don’t have a good product the only way to compete is by being cheap, true?) Usually, a really cheap party magician is either inexperienced or not very entertaining.

How Much Do Magicians Charge for Parties in New York City?

A typical children’s party magician will charge about $450 to $650 for a show. I’ve seen decent magicians charge only $275 … I’ve seen very successful ones charge over $800 for the same type of party.

What to Avoid When Hiring a Magician

If you want to make sure you’re hiring a real professional, avoid booking your entertainer through a party store or a random party entertainment agency. Most party stores book anyone out for parties, many times without even seeing the act. In my 30 + years of performing magic all over New York I have been booked by dozens of “agents” who never took the time to meet me, never mind audition me! Typically these “agents” quote a price and take a deposit before they even check to see who is available.  After you’ve paid your deposit they get on the phone and call anyone they can find! You end up paying a premium for a substandard show!

The Long Island Magician

It seems like every week I’m “magically appearing” in Baxter Estates and Manorhaven … as well as Sands Point … and Flowerhill (can they come up with more names for neighborhoods in Port Wash?) One day it’s a 40th birthday party in Manhasset Isle … or a family event at Harbor Links Golf Course  … or a bar mitzvah at H on the Harbor … it seems like I’m busy in Port Washington all the time.

Magical Entertainment  for Adults and Kids

While some magicians are great with sleight of hand … they can’t keep kids entertained. Others are fun for little kids but boring for adults. That’s where I come in. My magic show is perfect for family audiences.

I mix stand-up comedy with astounding magic and lots of audience participation … plus I add in some juggling and a live bunny rabbit too. The “stand-up show” runs anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.

Walk-Around Magic

Sometimes my clients don’t want a stand-up or stage show. Instead they want me to mingle with the guests and blow them away with incredible sleight of hand and mind-reading magic. This format is great for weddings, bar mitzvahs, corporate events, country club events, family parties and so on. Usually I will stroll around the party doing “close-up magic” during the cocktail hour or after the meal. (I don’t advise strolling magic during the meal … people want to eat!).

The secret to successful close-up magic in a strolling situation is being able to read the crowd.  I find the guests that look bored and within in minutes I’ve transformed a group of strangers at a table into a party of laughing and applauding friends. My magic gets people interacting and when I’ve finished my last trick the ice is broken and people are having fun.

I’ve even been hired by corporations to entertain clients at client dinners. Since the boss and the salespeople can’t be everywhere at once, very often they’ll book me to get clients, suppliers and vendors in the mood to party. One very clever broker hired me to entertain at an event … and it wasn’t even his event.

While other vendors paid thousands to sponsor the event (which just earns them a listing in the invitation and a thank you from the host) my client was really smart. For much less money he hired me to go around the cocktail party and entertain. At every group I mentioned my sponsor’s company, mesmerized them with magic and right before my last trick the sponsor walked over. I introduced him again as the sponsor – did the trick and when I walked away he would be swamped with new people to meet and greet. He landed a ton of new clients that night.

Magic … it’s not just for kids!  I’ve done magic for 100th birthday parties as well as surprise parties for 65th, 50th, 40th, 30th and 21st birthdays.  Recently I did a 21st birthday party for the lead singer of a Long Island band – it was awesome.  On the same day I did a party for an 8 year-old.
